Feline celebs star in Mr. President’s cute campaign with a serious message

Today sees the launch of a cat video with a mission. The world’s favourite social felines, including Lil BUB, Princess Monster Truck, Nala Cat, Hamilton the Hipster Cat and more, are coming together, in partnership with Greenpeace to save the tigers on International Tiger Day.

The Cats Save Tigers film is not just cute, but carries a serious message too – that there are only 3,000 tigers left in the wild today and, without serious action, these beautiful big cats are threatened by global extinction.

That’s why the biggest cats of the Internet are taking it into their own paws to save the biggest cats in the wild. Encouraging all cats around the world to join the cause and share the message on International Tiger day.

The video can be viewed on the Greenpeace Cats Save Tigers website, where cat- owners and their feline friends can join the cause by creating their own Cats Save Tigers ‘meme’ picture.

The concept and development of the Cats Save Tigers social campaign was the work of creative agency Mr. President who came up with the idea after hearing about the desperate plight of tigers, and approached Greenpeace and leading ‘cat- lebrities’ to raise a helping ‘paw’ and spread the word.

The cats involved in the project include Lil BUB, Anankin, City the Kitty, Justin – fire survivor, Cole and Marmalede, Captain Pancake, Nala Cat, Spangles, Boris the Kitty, Lazarus, Oskar and Klaus, Venus, Princess Monster Truck, Pudge the cat, Richard Kitty and Hamilton the hipster cat.

With over 10.5 million combined social media fans, the cats will be bringing their collective social power to help raise awareness of this important cause, sharing the film and pictures via their own networks. Each of the famous cats – and their owners – gave their time and support for free.

Thea Hamrén, Creative Director at Mr. President, comments: “Having an addiction to LOL-cats, and after I discovered the heartbreaking facts about the tiger population, being able to push through this project with Greenpeace has been a dream come true. I feel very blessed to be in an agency where we can act on our passions to make a difference. My hope is that by using cuteness as a weapon, the cats we love will remind us of the cats we’ve forgotten.“

Tracy Frauzel, Mobilisation Strategy Director at Greenpeace, comments: "If we are going to save the world's remaining 3000 wild tigers and their habitat Greenpeace is going to have to engage a much broader and younger audience. The organisation is middle aged now, but that doesn't mean our campaigns have to be. And reaching new audiences means more experimentation, taking some risks, maybe doing something that will be a little cringe-worthy or seem a bit "fluffy" for some of our more seasoned and serious campaigners. Many of our digital staff are really excited about this campaign, not least because they have a legitimate reason to look at cats online. I think the rest will grow to love this as much as audiences all over the world love these famous cats. Especially if it means we can protect more tigers on the ground."

Richard George, Forest campaigner at Greenpeace, comments: “Time is running out for the world’s tigers. But if cat owners, cat lovers, and people who spend just a little bit too much time watching cute cat videos on the internet join forces, we can stop this destruction, save the world’s forests and make sure that these magnificent animals have somewhere safe to live, hunt, and chase red laser dots. That’s what tigers do, right? I’m sure I saw it on YouTube.”
