Brain Food: 6 Ideas That Turn Portable Stuff into Awesome Stuff

Starbucks cup art, a portable laptop stove, good coffee on the go, and more

Brain Food has a bit of a portable theme to it this week. LBB’s Addison Capper brings you coffee on the move that doesn’t taste like dishwater, a laptop that doubles up as a stove, and some totally awesome art centred around the Starbucks siren logo and paper cups. There are also extras in the form of a gif-tastic timewaster, a film that merges War of the Worlds with World War One, and a cleverly half-finished KitKat billboard ad out of JWT London.

1. Paper Cup Art

Starbucks cups are useful for little more than containing really mediocre tasting coffee. Or am I being a bit generous there? Anyway that’s what I used to think until I saw these wondrous illustrations from self-proclaimed ‘paper cup artist’ Soo Min Kim. He has been turning the coffee cups into art canvases for a few years now and has even held exhibits of his doodles. See more of his work on his Facebook and official site

2. Laptop Stove

I’m a keen cook, but a lot of the recipes I follow come from the Internet. That means a spot for my laptop/tablet needs to be factored into my cooking area. This sleek design from Macedonian designer Dragan Trenchevski incorporates online recipe reading into cooking beautifully. The ‘Electrolux Mobile Kitchen’ features a four tier induction cooktop, a chopping board and a touchscreen computer that lets you browse recipes and cooking videos - as well as other computer-y stuff. If it’s ever put into production it isn’t going to get people changing their home setups, but it’d definitely be a welcome addition to any camping trip. See more of Trenchevski's work here.

3. Timbuk2 x Blue Bottle Travel Kit

A couple of months ago in this column I wrote about Barisieur, a concept alarm clock that brews a good quality cup of fresh coffee as you wake up. Well here’s another idea that’s making decent coffee more accessible on the move. Bag manufacturer Timbuk2 has collaborated with Blue Bottle Coffee to create the Timbuk2 x Blue Bottle Travel Kit. It’s a portable kit that contains coffee beans, a Porlex grinder, Bonmac dripper and filters, two cups with felt sleeve and a bag for it all to fit in. Everything, really, needed to make an ace cup of Joe while out and about. Read more about it here.

4. Great Martian War

This eerie short superimposes the tripods from War of the Worlds into footage from World War One. It was directed by Plazma’s Christian Johnson and Impossible Factual’s Steve Maher History Canada documentary ‘The Great Martian War’.

5. Have a br

Super stuff from JWT London here. The agency has cleverly represented the iconic line ‘Have a break. Have a KitKat.’ with this billboard that suggests the guy erecting the poster has knocked off for a cuppa. Brilliant.

6. See Hear Party

Music + gifs. You can't really go wrong can you. See Hear Party is a totally pointless but wholly brilliant site that picks gifs from around the web that are related to four words of your choice and cuts them into a mesmerising ensemble to the a song of your choice. Enjoy… Just beware. It’s very, very easy to waste a lot of time on. Try it out here
